On the Seven Network show The Single Wives, British dating guru Matthew Hussey dishes out home truths to four women who have experienced heartbreak but are looking to move on. But when not sorting out the love lives of reality TV stars, the 31-year-old—he has more than 1.3 million subscribers to his Youtube channel and has written New York Times bestseller Get the Guy— is putting his theories into practice with girlfriend Camila Cabello, 21, and just loves spending quality time with his rellies.

Why get involved in the show?

[ Laughs] I can’t stand reality TV. I just loathe it. I never thought there would be a concept that would make me want to get into reality TV, but this came along! I remember the first meeting with producers: it was pitched to me as four women who wanted to get back out there after being divorced. That alone brought me in. Not going with young people getting drunk on an island was refreshing. These are women who have got messy lives, who have been through it [and] that represents all of us. We’ve all got messy lives in reality. And how great is it that we’re not trying to make them perfect? They’ve been through it, they’ve got wounds, and that seems cool to me.

Do the Single Wives find love?

I don’t care! Everyone wants me to care if they end up with their fairytale, but I don’t! I care that they go away with a completely different level of confidence and that they go away with a process that they can repeat next month if they want to. If you’ve got a process, if you lose the guy you’re with today, you can do it again. But if you just got lucky because you met someone at the right place at the right time, well that’s a winning lottery ticket. And a danger with a winning lottery ticket is you can get rich but if you lose that money you don’t know how to make it again. In our love lives, I don’t want people to have a winning ticket, I want them to have a business model.

Did you use your techniques to woo Camila?

I’m inspired by her—as a performer and as an artist. Anyone who knows her knows she’s a true artist. I’ve been incredibly inspired by being close to her and seeing the way she approaches her work. She’s an incredible human being. I mean, we met and clicked. I was just who I was at that time and she was who she was at that time, so we both felt the way we felt. One of the best dates I’ve ever had is with the person I’m with now.

How do you cope being away from family?

The time I get most sad is when I go home for a week and the day that I’m leaving is always hard. You know you only have a limited amount of time with the people you love. Especially your parents. You know, my parents are my best friends. You don’t know how long you have with them—i feel it every time I’m not with them. My cousin had a baby recently, it’s those things, when you’re not there for that. You miss three months or four months of them growing, and that I find tough—it’s sad for me.
