A FINE PAIR NEW INSATIABLE STARRING: Debby Ryan, Dallas Roberts

Weeks before its premiere, this dark, campy comedy was criticised for fat-shaming, based mostly on its trailer. But the show is really more about the perils of fat-shaming. It’s fuelled by an anguished sense of how adolescent low esteem can lurch into psychopathology— Carrie without telekinetic fire. Or Heathers with the Heathers internalised. Just don’t expect Dietland. High-schooler Patty (Ryan) is bullied because of her size, but after losing weight, she’s a potential pageant queen training for titles like Miss Okefenokee Swamp. She also starts doing despicable things. The opening episodes are wackadoodle but very watchable. (Now on Netflix)
