DOMINIQUE JACKSON AND INDYA MOORE
Quick-fire Q&A
In Pose, the transgender actors live large as part of the fabulous ballroom scene in 1980s New York. (Season 1 finale airs Tues., Oct. 30, 8.30pm; Fox Showcase) What did you love most about filming the show?
JACKSON We were telling a story of people that would have loved, if they were alive to this day, to be a part of. And then on top of that, the ability to work with the genius of [show creator] Mr Ryan Murphy. Did you have a favourite outfit? JACKSON That Victorian queen costume with the $20,000 crown and collar. I felt transported back to that era, where it was nothing but sophistication and power and beauty and strength. Why is this such an important story? MOORE Pose is bringing the experiences of [those] who have been ignored for so long to people’s personal spaces – bedrooms, families, living rooms – and creating empathetic pathways. It’s an incredible show that
everyone needs to watch. It’s not about trans people, it’s not about the ballroom scene. It’s about family. What’s your tip for being fabulous?
MOORE Live your best life without the consideration of other people. When we live with the expectations of others in mind we are not going to become ourselves, we’re going to become them. And that’s not who we want to be. JACKSON Look in the mirror, face your fears and believe in your uniqueness. You can be your own beautiful self, but you have to wear that on the outside. As we say in ballroom, “You have to sell it, and they will buy it.”
