KASEY CHAMBERS
The 42-year-old singer-songwriter is celebrating the 20th anniversary of debut The Captain with a deluxe edition of the album (out Fri., May 17) and tells WHO about the song …
… she first learned all the words to
“Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper. I remember thinking, “Who is this weird, quirky chick who sings songs from the heart? I want to be just like her!”
… she never wants to hear again
“Love Bites” by Def Leppard. I had a big crush on this boy who didn’t even know I existed when that was a hit.
… that inspired her to perform
My dad took me to see Lucinda
Williams when I was a teenager and she played a song called
“The Night’s Too Long.” I decided then to write my first song.
… that provided the soundtrack to her first love
My first real love was the guy I wrote
“The Captain” for, so that song has always been extra special. That’s the beauty of being a songwriter – you can write your own soundtracks.
… she turns to when she needs comfort
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by Bob Dylan.
… that is guaranteed to get her dancing
I never really dance but sometimes in my kitchen my 7-year-old daughter will put on “Uptown Funk” and I find myself dancing around with her. Luckily no-one can see in from the road.
… of her own that’s had the most surprising impact
When I wrote “Ain’t No Little Girl”, I didn’t think it was that special but it has changed my life and made me a better, stronger person. I thank that song for getting me through so many things.
