GET HOLLYWOOD FIT
Celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson shares his top tips
Trainer to the stars Gunnar Peterson has worked with some of the world’s biggest celebrities. Counting the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner as his clients, Peterson is the man behind some of Hollywood’s fittest physiques. Speaking to WHO for the launch of his fourweek program for women on Hemsworth’s and wife Elsa Pataky’s Centr app (available June 17 – July 14), the strength coach reveals how anyone can get LA-toned in no time, without paying thousands on trainers and gym memberships.
“Starting any time is key,” Peterson says. “People go, ‘I’m going to wait until after my work day,’ or, ‘I’m going to wait until Monday,’ or, ‘I’m going to wait until
January 1,’ ” Peterson adds.
“Whatever it is, that stuff at the end of the day, that kind of falls by the wayside and what matters is that you started and you kept going.”
That determination and will to put in the hard yards is what Peterson says sets his celebrity clients apart. “The people who come to me come because they want to work. They walk in, they’re ready to go, this is what they’re here for,” he reveals.
“People like KateBeckinsale, Sylvester Stallone and Khloé Kardashian – these are people who push, push, push, push.” And it’s an attitude clear to see in Kardashian, who is known for her impressive weight loss in recent years, inspiring others to take control of their lives. And, according to Peterson, it’s her day-in, day-out motivation that keeps the mum of True, 1, in good shape. “Show up every day, knock it out, get out, go to work, stress levels managed, hydrating properly, making good choices at the table and getting adequate sleep.”
To keep his clients consistent, Peterson
“These are the people who push, push, push”
says the key is to “make the workouts fun, make the workouts effective, make them doable or just slightly out of reach but not so much they kill you and you’re crippled – no-one’s looking for that in their life.”
Kardashian herself has said she likes to go that extra mile in pushing herself. “The best project you’ll ever work on is YOURSELF! Project KoKo is an everyday thing. Mind, body, soul,” she wrote on February 11, 2017.
The results are found in that “extra 30 seconds” or “two per cent higher incline” on the treadmill, Peterson says. That is “where the magic comes”.
Speaking of bodies that look like they were created by magic, Peterson’s clients Hemsworth and Pataky spring to mind – but as Pataky concedes, it’s all down to their hard work.
“I can’t be without training for more than two weeks – I just get really nervous and my energy starts to go down,” she told Women’s Health. “When you start working out and your body’s changing and you’re achieving your goals, that’s such a great thing.”
