EMMYS SNUBS AND SHOCKS

All the hits – and misses – ahead of TV’s biggest party

The nominations for the Emmy Awards are in, and they appear to have caused as much drama as that found in the Outstanding Drama category! For its final run, Game of Thrones is up for a phenomenal 32 nominations alone – the most for any show in a single season. The record was last held by NYPD Blue, which earned itself a staggering 26 nominations in 1994. Within eight popular seasons, GoT has received 161 nominations in total.

Although it was expected that Game of Thrones and Veep would be honoured on the 71st annual ballot, there were a lot of other spaces left up for grabs as heavy-hitters such as HBO’s Westworld and Season Three of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale surprisingly didn’t make the list this year.

Meanwhile, a number of stars who did get a nomination have reacted with heartfelt statements. This Is Us star Mandy Moore, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead

Actress in a Drama Series, can’t cope with her emotions. “I am still in shock and overwhelmed with gratitude to the Academy for being nominated in a category with such undeniably strong and talented women, all of whom I absolutely stand in awe of,” she said. “After three seasons and 54 episodes, it’s a tremendous honour to have the hard work of our crew, cast and creators recognised amongst TV’s best and brightest. This Is Us is the job of a lifetime and I wake up grateful every day to be on this ride.”

Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, who is nominated for two Emmys in her role as writer and star of Hannah Gadsby: Nanette, has also shared a message about the prestigious awards. “I am so grateful for the Television Academy’s warm embrace* of Nanette. (*entirely consensual, to be sure) What an honour to be nominated.”

British favourite Hugh Grant was also acknowledged – up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in A Very English Scandal. Meanwhile, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee Robin Wright shared some touching words about her role on House of Cards. “I’m thrilled and grateful to the Television Academy for recognising House of Cards. It has been an honour to not only

act, but also direct and produce a show that was the first of its kind. I share this with all of the amazing people that poured their hearts and souls into creating this over the past six seasons.”

Although the competition is tight, perhaps the most thrilling nominations are for Killing Eve stars Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, who will go head-to-head for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award at this year’s Emmys. Bring on TV’s night of nights!

The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Foxtel’s FOX8 channel direct from Los Angeles on Sep. 23 at 10am.
