What is the best thing to do if you’re hoping to get into shape for summer? The hardest thing is taking that first step and making the change. So the easiest way to get started is with body weight exercises that you can do anywhere so you have no excuse not to get them done. (See Functional Fitness on previous page.) What was is like training Kylie Gillies? Being a full-time working mum, Kylie had not made her own fitness a priority for some time, so we had to find out what her goals were and make sure they were achievable and not too daunting.

What was the first priority for Kylie?

We had to create a base level of fitness that would allow her to work at a high enough intensity to achieve her goals.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to lose 5kg?

Eat with purpose; it’s likely that if you are only 5kg overweight, your diet is generally healthy, but may not be geared specifical­ly to your goals. If somebody is 15kg overweight, they are more likely to require a more dramatic lifestyle overhaul.

What exercises did Kylie do?

Each session was no more than 45 minutes in duration and incorporat­ed athletic-based exercises that required her to use multiple muscle groups at all times.

How can the average person incorporat­e this into their day?

Schedule it like any other meeting or appointmen­t. Don’t allow anything to interrupt or take its place.
