Taylor Swift may have broken the record for the most wins at the 2019 American Music Awards this week, but it was Lizzo’s teeny tiny handbag that stole the show.
The singer/rapper sent the internet into a frenzy when she turned up with her Valentino accessory, which measured no more than 3cm wide. “I got tampons in here, a flask of tequila, condoms,” she quipped. “There’s only three in the world.”
The fashion statement instantly spawned dozens of memes, with the 31-year-old sharing some of her favourites to Instagram.
“@maisonvalentino bag big enough for my f--ks to give. Big body bitch in a Valentin-HO custom look for AMAs,” she wrote in a post.
Lizzo had a breakout year with the release of her album, Cuz I Love You.
Her single, ‘Truth Hurts’, which was released in 2017, also burst into the charts this year after featuring in Netflix movie Someone Great and has now spent a record-breaking seven weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
However, Lizzo said she wasn’t always so sure the world would ever discover the song’s greatness.
“The day I released ‘Truth Hurts’ was probably one of the darkest days I’ve had ever in my career. I remember thinking, ‘If I quit music now, nobody would notice. This is my best song ever, and nobody cares,” she told WHO in June.
“Now the song that made me want to quit is the song that everyone’s falling in love with me for, which is such a testament to journeys: your darkest day turns into your brightest triumph.” And Lizzo is certainly triumphing. When her first solo shows in Australia went on sale last week, more than 12,000 fans attempted to buy tickets for the Sydney Opera House event, despite the venue only holding 2000 people. Here’s hoping she’ll be heading to our shores again soon!
