Known for its surfing beaches, ancient caves, culinary delights and fine wine, the Margaret River region might be tucked away in an isolated south-west corner of Western Australia but that doesn’t stop it from being one of Australia’s most-loved wine regions.

Home to the famous Margaret River Gourmet Escape festival, which takes place each November, and renowned for its elegant cabernet sauvignons, Margaret River has more than 90 cellar doors, including big names such as Vasse Felix, Moss Wood, Leeuwin Estate and Voyager Estate.

The world-famous region also has plenty of exciting emerging winemakers, including L.A.S. Vino, LS Merchants and McHenry Hohnen Vintners.

It is hard to go past the divine Cape Lodge, a 22-room country house retreat set on 16 hectares, with its own vineyard, in the heart of the wine region.

Injidup Spa Retreat is a small and luxurious hideaway offering 10 villas, each with a private deck, plunge pool and views over Injidup Bay.

For resort-style accommodation, try Smiths Beach Resort on the very edge of Yallingup, while glampers will love the safari-style bungalows at Olio Bello Lakeside Glamping.

You’re spoilt for choice for quality dining.

Don’t miss chef Aaron Carr’s Yarri Restaurant and Bar in the hip little holiday town of Dunsborough.

Miki’s Open Kitchen is always busy – for good reason. Pull up a seat at the counter and watch owner-chef Mikihito Nagai prepare Japanese dishes from the a la carte and degustation menus.

To ensure you don’t miss the highlights and hidden gems, Margaret River Tours offers fullday and half-day gourmet wine tours.
