THE SPORTS REPORTER GETS CANDID ABOUT THE AFL GRAND FINAL SHAKE UP

-

Following a difficult season that was heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Channel Seven boundary reporter and former AFLW star Abbey Holmes can barely believe they’ve almost made it to the finish line.

“There will be a lot of emotion this year and I’ll probably be a blubbering mess on the sidelines,” the 29-year-old told WHO of the upcoming AFL Grand Final.

“It’s been a really tough season, and this year won’t be about who is the strongest physical side. The team that wins will be the one who has come together and adapted the best. It’s the best two sides in the competition going head to head in a pretty brutal clash. I can’t wait,” she explains.

How do you feel about the final being held outside of Melbourne for the first time?

It’s been a crazy year for everyone – AFL included. While we’re used to the match being held at the MCG, I’m really looking forward to seeing it at the Gabba in Brisbane. It’s going to be a really special day that will go down in Australian sporting history.

What impact do you think moving the season out of Victoria has had?

While it’s been sad for Victorian fans who haven’t been able to get to games to support their team, the exposure in New South Wales and Queensland, which are traditionally more supportive of the NRL, has been great.

As a former AFLW pioneer, do you miss playing on the field when you’re reporting from the side?

It’s a very different experience. I love playing AFL but was forced to stop because of my injuries. But I’m such a footy head still – I love watching it and talking about it. So now that it’s my job, I feel so lucky and very grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. What advice do you have for young girls interested in playing AFL?

Firstly, get out there and have fun with your mates! Ask questions and work hard as you never know what opportunities will present themselves. And never be afraid to dream big. (The 2020 AFL Grand Final coverage airs Sat., Oct. 24, 7.30pm on Channel Seven)
