The Buzz About … GARBAGE

SHIRLEY MANSON AND HER ICONIC ’90S BANDMATES ARE BACK WITH A FIERCE NEW ALBUM

-

For more than 20 years, Garbage have enjoyed a run of hit records. ‘Stupid Girl’, ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ and ‘The World Is Not Enough’ (the theme song of the Bond film of the same name) especially soundtracked the late ’90s and early 2000s.

Since then, the rock band, which also includes guitarists Duke Erikson, 70, and Steve Marker, 62, as well as drummer/ producer Butch Vig, 65, have remained busy and are releasing their acclaimed seventh studio album No Gods No Masters this week. Here, singer Shirley Manson, 54, tells WHO about the group’s new work … What does the album’s title mean to you? To me, it means equality for all. All humans are deserving of equality and respect. What do you think is special about Garbage and your dynamic as a group? We’re all prepared to make allowances. We’re a perpetually struggling, dysfunctional but still functioning democracy. How would you describe the album and what’s your stand-out track? The stand-out track for me is ‘Waiting for God’. It’s protesting systemic racism, which needs to be corrected as soon as possible. Your podcast [The Jump with Shirley Manson] has become incredibly successful.

Who would you like to interview?

I’d love to chat to Cardi B. I love her personality and her incredibly forthright viewpoint. She strikes me as a very authentic person and I have immense respect for her. What would you tell your younger self?

I’d tell her to take her seat at the table – don’t wait to be invited. I would tell her to smile less and be rude more. I would tell her, “You don’t have to take that s--t (from him or her).” (No Gods No Masters is out Jun. 11)
