EMILY DE MARGHERITI

THE ACTRESS IS HELPING BUILD THE INDUSTRY IN OZ

-

With a family history steeped in the arts scene, Emily De Margheriti has always felt acting runs in her blood. “My great, great grandfather, he used to do Monty Python – so he was big in the British acting scene,” the Australian actress explains to WHO. And despite her granddad warning her against the career path, she couldn’t be swayed. “Acting was something that I couldn’t shake of ,” she tells.

Hailing from Canberra, De Margheriti travelled across the country to study at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, where she graduated in 2016. She has since featured in numerous projects including I Hate Kids, as well as the acclaimed dramedy Ladies in Black.

Last year, she produced and starred in the horror lm Sissy – which was nominated for three AACTA Awards including Best Film – about a successful social media influencer who

Finds herself stuck in a remote cabin with her high school bully for a friend’s bachelorette weekend. “It was so much fun,” the actress says of lming. “When I read the script, I kind of fell in love with it. We all have that online persona, that highlight reel and the world is very socialmedia orientated now … so delving into that and bringing in the horror aspect into it, you can kind of poke fun at it.”

With Sissy being lmed in Canberra, it boosted De Margheriti’s desire to help foster the arts industry in Australia. She and her production company, Dems Entertainment, are currently in the process of building a lm studio in Canberra so that they’re able to continue creating and nurturing the talent Down Under. “I always felt like I had the support network around me and I had the capabilities to create my own work for myself and others, so I feel like it was the natural next step,” she explains. “We’re really trying to help lmmakers.”

(Sissy is now available to stream on Shudder)
