Royals at home Kate’s day-to-day

In her most revealing interview yet, the duchess proves she’s even more normal than we thought!

She lives in a grand palace, wears fabulous designer clothes and, together with her husband the Duke of Cambridge, she’s leading the British monarchy into the future.

But opening up in her most candid interview yet, the Duchess of Cambridge reveals she’s just a regular mum trying to balance work and getting through the day with two energetic toddlers who keep her on her toes. And she doesn’t know what she would do without Peppa Pig and takeaway dinners!

Friends say Duchess Kate, 35, and Prince William, 34, are easily the most down-to-earth royals – and they’re determined to make their life with children Prince George, three, and Princess Charlotte, who turns two this week, as normal as possible.

That means Kate and Wills have turned their backs on private chefs and fancy dinners. And while Kate usually does her own food shopping at the local grocery store, she too gets tired of cooking dinner day in, day out. According to the duchess, she and William just love ordering in.

“Curry, definitely” is her favourite takeaway food, although Wills – who admits he’s “not so good with spicy food” – prefers Chinese, and they’ll often settle on pizza to please the whole family.

Like many parents, Kate and Wills relish the opportunity to get into their “comfy clothes” and catch up on their favourite TV shows. But it’s only “once the kiddies are in bed”. That said, the couple rarely get the chance to put their feet up and have total control of the remote – more often than not it’s cheeky George who decides what the family watch.

“Fireman Sam has taken an awful lot of interest,” Wills says, revealing his son’s favourite cartoon character. “You have to pretend you’re really interested because George gets quite upset if you’re not showing due diligence to the characters.”

And Kate and Wills are very thankful for Peppa Pig, who has kept little George entertained for hours on end and will most likely become Charlotte’s favourite. “George has gone past the Peppa Pig stage, Charlotte will probably be into Peppa Pig soon,” Wills adds. For Kate, downtime with her husband is always welcome and she confesses she sometimes finds motherhood a challenge – just like every other mum on the planet! “It is lonely at times and you do feel quite isolated, but actually so many other mothers are going through exactly what you are going through,” she says. “Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not.

“Nothing can really prepare you for the sheer, overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother,” she adds. It’s full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love and worry, all mixed together.”

Kate will be an even busier mum once George starts school in September. In keeping with her style, she’ll be a normal school mum. “I may see you at the school gates,” she told one mum recently.
