The musician asks for her hand – for the second time
On the eve of her 50th birthday, Nicole Kidman’s life is better than it’s ever been – and now she has even more reason to celebrate.
Nicole was on the Cannes red carpet last week promoting her movie The Killing Of A Sacred Deer when her husband Keith Urban appeared beside her with a romantic surprise. Onlookers say the starry-eyed musician appeared to ask his wife to marry him again – and Nicole was so moved she burst into tears.
In a beautiful show of commitment, Keith took his wife’s hand and told her how much he wants to reaffirm his devotion to her. His request to renew their vows overwhelmed Nicole, who has, at times, feared for their marriage. But these pictures of the intimatemoment show that their relationship is stronger than ever.
Red-carpet displays of affection are not uncommon for Nicole and Keith, 49, who are famous for their “kuzzle” clinch. But Nicole’s raw emotion made it clear this was no ordinary outing for the loved-up couple.
It’s understood they will time their vow renewal to coincide with Nicole’s birthday on June 20, which is five days before their 11th wedding anniversary.
Earlier this year, Keith told reporters he was planning a big surprise for Nicole’s birthday, and hinted it would be major.
“I gotta keep it a secret!” he said. “I’m planning stuff right now that I can’t talk about! I feel incredibly lucky and blessed, definitely.”
Nicole and Keith – who have daughters Sunday, eight, and Faith, six – have weathered many storms during their relationship, including Keith’s admission to rehab just months into their marriage and his rumoured connection with Jennifer Lopez while on American Idol. But they’ve survived and the couple are more committed to each other than ever.
It’s fitting that Keith chose the Cannes red carpet for his big moment. Nicole has been dubbed this year’s Queen of Cannes, due to appearing in an impressive four projects screening at the festival – marking a new high in her career trajectory.
Her recent acting resurgence includes her star turn in TV series Big Little Lies, which won her a whole legion of new fans.
“Suddenly I was being recognised... Women were coming up to me on the streets,” Nicole says. “They were all talking about the character and what was going to happen next. I was even getting texts from Keith’s friends.”
With her career riding high and her union about to be renewed, it seems the next stage of Nicole’s life could be the best yet.
