When Sabrina JacquierParr decided to get married, the last thing she wanted was to spend a fortune on one day – but what she did want was a special celebration.

“I’d been to all of my friends’ weddings and they were beautiful, but I knew I was not prepared to spend $70,000 on one day,” says the 38-year-old Sydneysider.

Instead, she and then fiance Nicholas Boutmy, also 38, decided to get thrifty – and they soon found they could still say “I do” in style.

The couple spent most of their budget on the reception – a fancy restaurant for 50 guests – and a company to style the ceremony, but the rest of their big day cost a fraction of the normal price.

For instance, the wedding cake wasn’t a traditional affair – “I went with a well-known cake maker,” says Sabrina, “who was really up and coming at the time.” To save a little extra cash, she didn’t say the cake was for a wedding, and she bought the “Mr & Mrs” cake topper from Etsy for $10.

She and Nicolas then saved around $6000 by turning to Airtasker for their videographer and calligrapher, and even found a wedding organiser – for just $30 an hour – to pretty up the reception beforehand using their Kmart decorations.

Ten minutes before the ceremony, Sabrina booked an Uber Black. “It was a beautiful Mercedes-benz, which was perfect.” The groom got a Goget t Audi and after the reception they y just dropped it around the corner. r.

“You don’t need to spend tens s of thousands of dollars to have a beautiful day. Nicholas and I had d our dream wedding,” she says.

After such a successful – and economical – big day, Sabrina has just one tip for other brides doing their research: “Don’t say it’s for a wedding – any time you start tacking on that word the prices go up!”
