Happy for Harry!
When I heard the exciting news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement I felt very happy, especially for Harry. I cannot forget the heartbreaking images of Harry walking behind his mother Princess Diana’s coffin in 1997. At last he’ll have a life companion to walk alongside him as he fulfils his royal duties. I hope and pray the young couple enjoy a lifetime of happiness. Lois Morrissey, Strathdale, Vic
Scrapbook friend
In A Lifetime Of Letters, Irene Rivans said she’d been writing to Klaus Berger for 60 years ( WD, November 13).
In 1958, my Sunday School teachers were going to Japan for a conference and we were encouraged to make a scrapbook to send over there with them. I wrote my name and address on mine, but was told they couldn’t read English.
Hisako Yasmi, who was teaching English at a high school in Matsuyama, received my book. Hisako thanked me for it in a letter. She was 27 and I was only 12. We’ve been writing to one another all this time. She is now 87 and I’m 72. Merle Morey, Numurkah, Vic
Pollies in peril
I think it’s a shame to see capable politicians ousted for having dual citizenship – is this not excessive jingoism?
Many of them have British heritage and, after all, our political system began under instructions from Britain. Our first Prime Minister Sir Edmund Barton was the son of an English immigrant. Our head of state is British! Surely there are other criteria of more importance?
My late father had dual citizenship (Australian and Czech) and I know he loved and was loyal to both countries.
If the politicians in question are doing a good job, then I don’t think having a dual citizenship should render them exempt – do you? Robyn Roberte, Woollahra, NSW
