It’s time to stress less and enjoy yourself more. Thanks to our experts, you’ll nail all your at-home festivities this year.

CHOOSE A THEME

Choosing a theme to focus on – for instance candy canes or even bananas – will help with a colour palette and fun food ideas. Think outside the box and if you’re stuck, look to Pinterest. As for colour trends, events manager Christine Ligthart says, “This year we’re loving greenery, black and discreet touches of gold.”

MAXIMISE SPACE

Dot platters around the room with mixed nibbles to graze on – people can then break off into smaller groups if they want to. Alongside the usual wine and beer, serve one signature cocktail to make things that little bit special while maintaining simplicity. And delegate someone to hand out filled glasses on a tray.

MAKE IT PRETTY

Linen, glassware, candles, flowers and even fruit on a table will all look pretty, even if no one’s sitting down. And always dim the lights – there’s nothing worse to kill a vibe, or discourage dancing – than flaw-revealing fluoros.

MONEY MATTERS

Big or small, we’re all on a budget. Be it decorating or invitations, throw yourself, and the kids, into some DIY. “You’ll find lots of video tutorials on Youtube,” says events manager Lisa Macale.

STAND OUT

Could you handmake themed place-cards, or set up some classic games like Santa sack races? “Your ideas should create a talking point,” says Christine.

BE GRACIOUS

“Greet every guest when they arrive,” says etiquette expert Zarife Hardy. “A warm welcome sets a positive tone for a gathering. Even if you’re held up talking to someone, make sure you go and welcome every person there. Try to also talk to everyone equally.” Don’t get stuck in the kitchen. Make a few fancy salads so if all else fails you’ll have something delicious to feed people.
