The relationship that almost sunk the royal family has finally imploded – with a divorce announcement mere days away
Rumours have swirled for months that the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall is shaky. But despite the warning signs, palace sources say Camilla, 70, was left in complete and utter shock when she saw an email making it clear Charles intends to divorce her immediately!
A palace aide has revealed Camilla stumbled across an emailed wedding guest list for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming nuptials in May. She was stunned to realise one name wasn’t included – hers!
According to palace sources, Charles decided to put an official separation in motion after Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas address in which she hinted it’s only a matter of time before she retires. As the time nears for him to become king, Charles has finally realised he can’t take to the throne married to someone the public has never warmed to.
Insiders say the impending wedding of his son, Prince Harry, gave the monarch-in-waiting the push he needed to pull the plug on Camilla, who he wed in 2005.
As Woman’s Day reported last month, Camilla has been at odds with Harry’s 36-year-old fiancee, Meghan Markle, since Harry announced his engagement to the Us-born actress in November. With Meghan winning over the public – and gaining comparisons to Harry’s beloved mother, Diana – Charles realises it’s time to take a stand against his furious wife.
“Camilla can’t stand Meghan and has not been shy about it,” says a royal insider. “Since she married Charles, Camilla has become the most crashing snob. She would’ve preferred Harry to marry some pliant English rose who would have accepted that Camilla is the boss. But Meghan doesn’t stand for any y nonsense.
“Charles has found the whole thing exasperating. He can’t believe his wife is so small-minded and has told her to her face. For once he’s putting his sons first.”
Royal insiders tell Woman’s Day it was near the time of the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death that Charles, 69, began seriously considering divorce.
We’re told the prince felt guilty that not only were his sons forced to mourn their mother’s untimely passing afresh, but also endure even more ugly details of their father’s relationship with Camilla.
By contrast, his relationships with the sons he calls his “darling boys”, William, 35, and Harry, 33, only became stronger. The young royals are effusive in their public praise of Charles, who they say has always been “there for us”.
Harry recently admitted he relies increasingly on his father’s support. “I do end up picking your brains now more than I ever have done,” he recently told Charles on BBC Radio.
With Camilla aware her days in Kensington Palace are numbered, discussion as to when to make the announcement is underway. With William and Kate preparing for the birth of a child in April, and Harry and Meghan preparing for their May wedding, the palace is said to favour making a divorce public as soon as possible so the family can enjoy the occasions without any scandal ahead.
“Camilla’s dislike of Meghan is just the tip of the iceberg,” says our source. “There are huge flaws in the marriage – as Charles has finally come to realise.”
