Woman’s Day (Australia)

Music is our life!

-

There’s a great sense of satisfaction with what we get to do every day. To be in sync with a group of people playing music is wonderful. And it’s great at keeping the cogs turning at our age.

As babies, when we were put to bed, Mum would practise so we always went to sleep with the piano playing. We did string trios w with our brother, who played t the cello, and mum would a accompany on the piano. L Looking back, our playing w would have been terrible.

The concertmaster of th the Adelaide Symphony Or Orchestra rche took us on for six mo months onth to see if it was worth eve everyone’s eryo time and we end ended ded up staying with him for ssev seven years.

W We w were always moulded as twwi twins. We were in the same e class at school every year, the same sports teams, and would sit in on each other’s violin lessons. When our kids were little we’d be at work all day then be on the phone for two hours at night to talk about everything. We’re always there for one another.

Learning music is like learning a language. No matter where you go in the world, music is the same. We’re still growing and learning at every rehearsal. You have to have 100 per cent physical and mental commitment. It’s not enough to just sit there and play notes.

The record holder for the ASO is 48 years, so our goal is to beat that. We still love coming to work. As long as we’ve got marbles to play with, we’ll be here. Julie & Jenny Newman, Adelaide, SA
