Trev & TJ Team Hendy

Ironman icon Trevor Hendy couldn’t be prouder of his son TJ, who is making waves in the sporting world

Legendary six-time national Ironman champion Trevor Hendy has a very special reason to celebrate on Australia Day, knowing his eldest son TJ is following in his famous footsteps.

The father-and-son duo first paired up in 2015 to compete in the open men’s board rescue race at the national titles in Queensland – they crossed the line in first place. No one – least of all Trevor and TJ – expected they would win – and it was a victory Trevor describes as the most precious in his 30-year career.

“We came from last place. It all came down to a desperate sprint up the beach. TJ inspired me to dig that bit deeper and we clinched gold. What more can you ask for as a Dad?” an emotional Trevor tells Woman’s Day.

Turning 50 this year, Trevor is a man of reflection. His four children – Kristelle, 29, and TJ, 22, from his first marriage, and Bailey, 19, and Jaali, 14, with his current wife Jo – are unquestionably his greatest achievements.

“Each is beautifully different in their own right – all passionate and very kind souls with wonderful hearts full of love,” Trevor says.

“TJ made the decision he wanted to compete – not me. That was important for him and it was hard, but I had to let him find his way,” says Trevor, who now divides his time between his home on the Gold Coast – where he remains president of Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club – and travelling across the world as a life coach and mentor.

And TJ remains unruffled by all the attention. He has kept his eye firmly on the prize after winning the opening round of this season’s Nutri-grain Ironman Series.

“Dad won four series in total but I’m not competing with him,” the young champion points out. “I’m here for me and I’m content just so long as I know I’ve put my best effort in.

‘Obviously Dad’s been a huge role model’

“I only decided to enter the sport when I was 17. Obviously Dad’s been a huge role model and I’ve always been trying to impress him.”

Currently sitting at second place in the series, the Hendy clan will cheer TJ on in his next race on very familiar ground – Surfers Paradise Beach on February 4.

When asked how he will spend Australia Day, TJ doesn’t hesitate. “Maybe lifeguarding. But if not, on the beach, cricket bat in hand and having a good time with friends and family.”
