Matthew’s adoption joy!

The troubled actor has put his demons behind him to focus on family

Six years after his last run-in with the law and seeking help for his mental health issues, Matthew Newton is continuing to take steps to try to prove he’s a changed man.

Woman’s Day can reveal the Us-based Australian actor, 41, and his fiancee Catherine Schneiderman, 25, who live in New York’s trendy Upper West Side, have a new focus in their life together – after adopting two adorable black cats named Tiny and Jean.

Friends close to the pair say Matthew’s parents, showbiz royalty Bert and Patti Newton, are bound to be thrilled they’re on their way to starting a family.

“Matt and Catherine live for those two cats,” reveals an insider. “They call them their babies and spoil them rotten. Caring for Tiny and Jean is their number one priority!”

Matthew – whose high-profile struggles have included domestic violence and assault charges – and Cat are rarely seen in public together. But as our exclusive photos show, they made a rare outing to take one of their pets to the vet in the middle of a New York winter storm, despite reports they’d split in October last year.

“Catherine was really upset that one of her babies was sick, and she was chain-smoking to deal with her stress,” says a bystander at the hospital. “But Matthew tried his best to comfort her, and they were so happy to get their pet back from the vet with a clean bill of health.”
