It was supposed to be a romantic getaway for two, but now their marriage is in crisis
It was planned as a muchneeded child-free holiday to reignite the spark in David and Victoria Beckham’s relationship, just in time for their 19th wedding anniversary.
But insiders say fights over their make-or-break trip to the South Pacific have left the pair arguing more than ever before – and friends fear they’ll be left with no choice but to go their separate ways.
For years, there have been rumours of infidelity, jealousy and time spent apart. Just last year, David admitted, “Of course we go through tough times. Marriage is difficult.”
JUST ONE OPTION
But with their four children fast growing up and the couple spending more and more time away from each other, friends say the former soccer star and his 44-year-old wife may finally be ready to accept that a split is the only thing left for them to do.
And the sad reality is, with the pair spending so much time apart already over the past few months, living the single life won’t feel all that much different for either of them.
“David and Victoria are lucky if they spend more than a few days together every month, that’s how separate their lives are,” says an insider. “Their friends have known there have been issues for several years, but now the distance between them and the lack of passion is starting to grate on them, and even their friends are starting to notice.”
Woman’s Day’s sources confirm reports Victoria had booked a luxury two-week trip to Bora Bora in July – their 19th wedding anniversary – in a desperate effort to reconnect and relish their first holiday in a decade without their children, Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 15, Cruz, 13, and Harper, six.
“She cleared her schedule and had visions of them enjoying spa days together, relaxing, reading, with no phones, no ipads, no TV,” our source explains. “And David was all for it until he realised it was going to clash with the soccer World Cup, and he begged her to change the dates.
“But she just saw it as another sign that he can’t be bothered trying to make this work, so she cancelled the trip.”
The bitter fight capped off a particularly rocky few months for the Beckhams. Earlier this year, David’s decision to start a Major League Soccer team in Miami was said to have caused serious tension, with Victoria eager to stay in England, where their younger kids are in school.
SEPARATE LIVES
Becks, who turns 43 this week, only added insult to injury when his wife and kids visited him in Florida recently when he reportedly left them to go clubbing with Marc Anthony.
He sparked further talk when he posted a birthday message to Victoria recently, referring to her as “mummy”, but not wife.
With the designer also jetting around the globe constantly for work, our US source confirms the two have been increasingly “leading very different and separate lives”.
Now, an insider says the couple could be weighing up the very real prospect of a divorce – and how they would go about breaking the news to their kids.
“It’s painfully obvious to their friends that David and Victoria aren’t happy with the way things have been going,” the source adds.
