DREW’S HUSBAND OF 19 DAYS TELLS ALL!
Drew Barrymore’s first husband, who she branded a “devil”, has lifted the lid on their whirlwind romance, telling Woman’s Day she was too young for them to make their marriage work.
Hollywood wild child Drew famously landed in rehab for drug use at the age of 13, and at 19 she wed LA bar owner Jeremy Thomas, who was 31 at the time. Despite calling it a “hot, passionate romance that we couldn’t fight”, the actress filed for divorce less than two months after their 1994 union.
“She was probably a little bit under-age when she first started coming to the bar,” Jeremy says. “But she just fit in with everyone. She was a fun young girl and she’d come in here with her friends. It was just one of those moments. We got married in the bar and had the reception on the roof.”
Unsurprisingly, the marriage rapidly broke down, with Drew jetting off to Arizona for filming just 19 days after their impromptu wedding. She then called her new husband from Hawaii to tell him she’d gone on their honeymoon without him.
“Next thing I knew, she filed divorce papers,” he revealed in an earlier interview. “I really don’t know what caused her to turn on me so savagely.”
Following their split, Drew referred to Jeremy as a “devil” and “the biggest schmuck I have ever met,” but he’s not bitter towards her.
“It was an interesting insight into celebrity for me, because it’s a different world to what you’d think,” he says. “It was a trip.
“She’s had a couple of husbands hasn’t she? Couple of kids. I’m sure she’s doing fine, but I wouldn’t want to grow up in that world.”
