The X Factor
Jason Owen’s live TV proposal
When singer Jason Owen decided to propose to his girlfriend of three years, Rebecca Harvey, live on Studio 10, he wanted to show her the extent of his love. He won hearts all around Australia for his grand gesture, too.
“We couldn’t believe the response,” beams a delighted Jason, who first shot to fame on The X Factor seven years ago when he was runner-up to Samantha Jade. “After I proposed, hundreds of calls and emails of congratulations came in from everywhere!
“I guess it must have struck a real chord with people, and if it made them as happy as it made me that’s great,” chuckles Jason, 25. “I wanted to do something out of the blue, something really special to show Becy how much I love her. That’s when I decided to ask her to marry me on national TV.”
Jason’s proposal followed a powerhouse performance of his new single, a cover of Celine Dion’s The Power Of Love. But he admits he was worried Becy might not be OK with his elaborate plans. “If she’d said no I’d be buggered! It’s funny how love can make you do things way outside your comfort zone!”
However, his bride-to-be couldn’t be more delighted by the outcome. With a giant diamond sparkling on her engagement finger, 24-year-old Becy, an early childhood educator, is delighted to spend the rest of her life beside “born romantic” Jason. In fact, they’re so eager to become husband and wife they’re looking at tying the knot some time in the next year.
“He’s just amazing,” she smiles. “I love how adventurous he’s become. He’s changed so much. He’s travelled the world with me and treats my little rescue dog Princess like his own baby, although he’s not really an animal person. Now
I can’t wait to marry him.”
Jason shares the sentiment, adding, “To have someone like Becy in my life now, it’s just amazing. We always have such fun, there’s never a dull moment. We’re really happy together and want to make it forever.”
