Tassie’s Three Capes Lodge Walk

When you’re trekking nature’s paradise, you’d better share it with someone you love, says Woman’s Day’s FIONA CONNOLLY

Freezing i cold, ld wet, t stinky ti k and sore from days of hiking up and down three of Tasmania’s toughestgoing capes may not sound like the most romantic couples getaway. But it was.

Like drifting through a highdefinition nature documentary, we wound our way along the Tasman Peninsula, talking, laughing and soaking in what must be one of the most unsung, beautiful parts of Australia.

Never before had either of us seen so many double rainbows, stretching as far as the eye can see, arching over endlessly

changing scenery. From cliffs to rival Italy’s Almalfi Coast to lush rainforests straight out of a scene from The Hobbit and bush tracks with wallabies regularly crossing your path, you’ll find the true Tasmania on this trek.

LIVING IN THE MOMENT

With the vegetation of this coastal, rainforest region changing every few hundred metres, the biggest challenge is leaving your camera or smartphone in your pocket so you can just enjoy the views.

As our guides regularly reminded those having trouble disconnecting from their devices, this hike is all about living in the moment.

We were in a group of around 12, and with 40km distance to trek through rail, hail (literally) and shine, were prepared for a bit of chatter along the way.

Our group was a delightful mix of a mother and son, two neighbours, two professional hikers, two sisters, a mothers group and us, a professional couple looking to escape the halogen lights of our offices.

We got to know each other’s stories along the track, during evenings of beautifully prepared meals or a game of Scrabble by the fire in the main lodge. We were all there for the same reason – to escape into nature and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FITNESS REQUIREMENTS

The walk itself requires a decent level of fitness. If you exercise regularly, let’s say some form of cardio three days a week, you should be able to walk at a comfortable pace over the four days of trekking.

We didn’t do any training but would recommend trialling long walks in your hiking boots

carrying weight on your back. You’ll be provided with a pack to carry your essentials and a packed lunch each day.

The track itself is far from rugged. We marvelled at the excellent boardwalk and stone steps The Tasmanian Walking Company had built for much of the trek – a big tick. Three Capes is truly a bucket-list experience, and should be shared with someone special. If you want quality, bonding time with your loved one in the most exquisite parts of the world, look no further than this.
