POSH AT WAR WITH DAVID’S DAD!
The former Spice Girl put her father-in-law in his place on her kids’ special day
It was supposed to be a time to celebrate their two youngest children being christened, but instead David Beckham spent the special occasion tearing his hair out over his “tyrannical” wife Victoria.
A source tells Woman’s Day tensions began mounting between the couple in the days before the no-expenses-spared ceremony for Cruz, 14, and Harper, eight – at a time when their marriage is widely reported to be on extremely fragile ground.
“Victoria was a mad woman. She wanted everything to be perfect – you’d think she was planning a wedding,” says a source. “She was throwing orders like there was no tomorrow to her staff – and David bore a lot of the brunt of it, too. By the time the actual christening rolled around, David could barely bring himself to go!”
On the guest list was Victoria’s A-list mates, including godparents Eva Longoria and Marc Anthony, along with Elton John, who flew from Australia for the occasion.
But Posh further fuelled David’s fury when she banned the daughter of his dad’s new partner from both the ceremony and after-party at their Cotswolds home.
According to The Sun, David’s dad Ted and his girlfriend Hilary pleaded with Posh to allow Charlotte, 27, to be invited.
“Charlotte believes they are a family and should be invited as a unit,” says the newspaper’s source. “In the end Ted asked David if they could bring her. He said he’d speak to Victoria. But he came back and said sorry they couldn’t fit one more in. The bottom line is Victoria’s mistrust of any outsiders.”
Adds our insider, “David went into bat for Charlotte but it was a firm no. He’s very close with his father and felt really bad for him, and for Charlotte. He’s so embarrassed at Vic’s behaviour and he’s at his wits’ end over it. She cares more about her celebrity friends than her own family these days. David’s accusing her of forgetting where she came from.”
MATTER OF TRUST
But a source close to the former Spice Girl,
45, defended her decision, saying,
“Posh suspects Charlotte’s a bit of a social climber
– she doesn’t want anyone riding on her family’s coat-tails.”
The source admits that trust is becoming a deep issue for the fashion designer, who is also mum to Brooklyn, 20, and Romeo, 17.
“Posh is getting really paranoid about the stories about her marriage to David being on the rocks that have been leaking to the press, so she keeps her inner circle tight, even limiting family members from getting to know her.
“She’s also suffered huge humiliation in the past year with stories about her private finances, which are too specific to have come from anyone who’s not deeply in the know.
“With all this going on, and Posh being a tyrant about the christening plans, it’s not really helping her strained relationship. They had a huge fight about
Charlotte’s lack of invitation, which was the cherry on top of a bad year for them.
“Not that you’d have known it at Harper and Cruz’s christening, where she was the hostess with the mostess.
“Posh has a real knack for putting her game face on, but Becks not so much. Everyone could tell something was up with him, and there were no prizes for guessing what his problem was.”
