BRAVE SHANNEN ‘I’LL FIGHT THIS’

The actress reveals her cancer has returned

It’s been three years since Shannen Doherty joyously revealed she was “done with chemo” and “feeling great” again. But in a heartbreaking turn of events, the actress has now confirmed she has stage-four breast cancer, which she’s been courageously fighting in private for a year.

In an interview on Good Morning America, the star broke down in tears as she said, “I don’t think I’ve processed it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways.”

Shannen, 48, said she initially chose to fight her cancer in private because of the death of her close friend and Beverly Hills 90210 co-star Luke Perry, who suffered a heart attack in March 2019, leaving those close to him devastated.

To honour Luke, who starred as Dylan

Mckay in the original series, and as testament to her own fighting spirit, Shannen signed up to appear in the recent reboot.

“One of the reasons, along with Luke, that I did 90210 [was] because I thought, people can [see that] people with stage four can work too,” Shannen said. “Like, you know, our life doesn’t end the minute we get that diagnosis. We still have some living to do.”

Reboot castmate Brian Austin Green, who also starred in the original, was by Shannen’s side to support her when things got tough behind the scenes.

“I had moments of great anxiety where I thought, ‘I can’t really do this,’ and Brian was the one person… that I told, like, pretty quickly,” the actress revealed. “So he would always call me and say, ‘Listen, you know, whatever happens, I have your back’. ”

Shannen was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and had a mastectomy in 2016.

“I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’ ” Shannen said at the time. “And then I go, well, ‘Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do.”
