MAKE SOME HOMEMADE LEMONADE

Combine three cups of sugar with 15 cups of water in a saucepan. Bring to boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved, then let it cool to room temperatur­e and refrigerat­e until chilled. You’ll then need to stir in three cups of lemon juice and add another 10 cups of water. Slice up a lemon and throw in some ice.

PLAY ‘ALPHABET WARS’

Get your children to split li i into two teams. Then, in your house or backyard, give them an hour to find one object starting with each letter of the alphabet, which they collect. The team with the most objects wins the game!

MOVIE NIGHT

Enjoy a movie m marathon at home with you your DVD collection or streaming services and let the kids pick!

PLAY ‘FLAP THE KIPPER’

Cut out two large fish shapes from an old newspaper. Then divide the rest of the newspaper in two, roll each half up and secure it with sticky tape. Then, starting with both kippers at one side of the room, see who can get theirs across the other side first by banging the floor behind the kippers to make them move forward.

THE CHOCOLATE GAME

Buy the largest ch chocolate bar you can find and place it on a table with a knife and fork next to it. Then get a winter coat, a hat, gloves and a scarf and put them in a pile on the floor next to the table. On the other side of the room, everyone gathers around in a circle and takes turns throwing a dice. Whenever a six is thrown, that player runs over to the table and has to put on all the clothes before they can start eating the chocolate with a knife and fork. But, as soon as someone else throws a six, that person runs over and has to start dressing up. You have to be quick if you want a chunk of chocolate!

COLD WATER BATH GAME

If you’ve got a couple of f little littl ones in the tub, ask them some fun questions. If they get one wrong, pour a cup of cool water over them. The first to five wins the game.

POST-IT NOTE TREASURE HUNT

Gi Give the kids a clue to a special place in the house or backyard. Once they’ve worked it out, they go there and find another note with a clue to somewhere else. See if you can hide 10 clues, and place their favourite sweets in the final location as their “treasure”.

MILK CARTON BOWLS

Find 10 empty plastic bottles an and a ball (tennis or soccer balls are both fine) and you’ve got your very own bowling alley. Everyone gets one throw. If you knock a bottle down, you’re through to the next round. But if you miss, or the bottle doesn’t fall, you’re out. Keep going until the final bottle is down.

FILM MAKERS

Using a smartphone, give your kids three minutes to t make up and film the most entertaini­ng story they can think of. No need for any preparatio­n – the story can unfold in any way they like. The results will be hilarious!

THE MOST BORING PERSON IN THE WORLD

This game gam is simple. You have to think of something that you haven’t done that you think everyone else has done. Everyone starts with five counters or coins, but you have to surrender one every time you’ve done the thing in question. For example, “I’m the most boring person in the world because I’ve never seen a Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.” If any of the other players have seen one, they lose a counter.

Try taking a break from your screens. Raid your boo book collection for some reads appropriat­e for your kids and start a family book club. If reading isn’t your thing, try an audiobook or fun podcast.

PLAY GAME OF ‘WHIFF WHAFF’

Th That’s the original name for table tennis, invented by the English who used their dining room tables – and so can you! All you need is a row of hardback books balanced on their sides across the centre, a couple of bits of cardboard or flat wood to use as bats and you’re ready to play. If you don’t have a ping pong ball, a rubber one will do (as long as precious ornaments are put away in a cupboard). Each player gets five serves and the first to 21 wins.

MAKE YOUR OWN PHOTO ALBUMS

Many of us have hundred hundreds of photos laying around, or on our phones, that have never seen the light of day. Let the kids make their own creative photo album by choosing a selection of their favourite photos, sticking them into i a scrapbook and adding clever c captions.

COATHANGER BUBBLES

M Mix ¼ cup detergent with 3 ¾ cups cup of water in a washing-up bowl or on a large baking tray. Then, take a wire coathanger, bend and twist it into a loop or two, and you’re ready to go. The makeshift bubble wands will be a huge hit.
