MEGHAN STRIKES AGAIN NEW MUM EUGENIE IN TEARS
The happiest time of the princess’ life is tarnished by snide remarks
Princess Eugenie welcomed her firstborn child – a son – last week, sparking a pile-on of congratulatory messages from the Queen and Prince Philip down to the Duchess of Cambridge’s brother James Middleton.
But there was one royal, or formerly so, couple who remained strangely silent on the happy news – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Sources tell Woman’s Day Meghan, 39, and Harry, 36, “privately congratulated” Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank on the arrival of their baby boy, but their salutations “came with a large dose of passive aggression”.
“Meghan basically made it clear she thought it was ‘super cute’ that they took inspiration for baby York’s birth announcement photo from an artistic photo of her hand holding Archie’s foot that she shared on Mother’s Day, soon after his birth,” says a source.
“American sarcasm can often get lost in translation but I heard Eugenie was left in no doubt that Meghan was really sniping about Eugenie copying her, never mind that half the world’s parents post similar imagery of their babies every day on social media.”
ROYAL RIVALRY
This is just the latest reported jab Meghan’s taken at Eugenie, who was once considered her cousin Harry’s closest confidante within the family.
Just two months ago, Eugenie, 30, and Jack, 34, were putting the final touches on their son’s nursery at Frogmore Cottage, which was being privately sub-leased from Harry and Meghan, who in turn are leasing the property from the Queen, when they mysteriously moved out amid rumours the Sussexes had turfed them.
Sources say the tensions between them date back to when Meghan made it clear she was pregnant with her first child by dressing in a heavy overcoat to Eugenie and Jack’s 2018 wedding, overshadowing the occasion with their news.
“The Yorks were livid at the time,” says a source. “But it was pointed out to them that the Sussexes were untouchable as they were about to embark on a historic tour to Australia and New Zealand, and they didn’t want a grumpy Eugenie dominating the news cycle.
“Eugenie couldn’t believe she was being dictated to as a new
bride and a blood princess. She has lived in the shadow of Meghan’s headlinegrabbing behaviour ever since – which is why she takes her own shots by deliberately including her HRH title wherever she can, knowing that Meghan is still steaming that the Queen has stripped her of that title.”
Despite the obvious ongoing tension with her Us-based cousins, we’re told Eugenie is in a “love bubble” with her husband and son, who was born at Portland Hospital on February 9, the same place Meghan welcomed Archie in 2019, and where Eugenie herself was born in 1990.
The new mum is believed to be recovering at her father’s home, The Lodge at Windsor, and doing her best to ignore Meghan’s behaviour.
“She’s so besotted with her son,” says a source. “Eugenie’s never been an emotional person but she keeps finding herself staring at him in tears, so it’s obvious those post-birth hormones are running wild.”
