EARLY DAYS Software entrepreneurs Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph started Netflix as a Dvd-rental business in 1997, sending old films and TV shows to subscribers through the post. The US firm went public in 2002.
HISTORY In 2007, Netflix launched its streaming platform. In 2013, the company released all 13 episodes of its first original series: House of Cards, a remake of a popular BBC series from 1990. Binge-watching became a trend.
THREATS Amazon Prime and multiple new streaming options, including Apple TV+ and Disney+. Increased difficulty finding new subscribers, particularly in the US.
OPPORTUNITIES Its role as a Hollywood-style studio. In 2019, Netflix offered 2,769 hours of original content. The company has increased its focus on big-budget productions with A-list celebrities, such as Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, with Al Pacino.
