EARLY DAYS The BBC (British Broadcasti­ng Corporatio­n) started as a public-service radio broadcaste­r in 1922. The BBC World Service was launched in 1932 and is now available in over 40 languages.

HISTORY In 2007, the BBC iplayer was released. It allows licence-fee payers in the UK to stream content. Apart from a few scandals, the BBC has focused on family entertainm­ent, accurate informatio­n and neutrality.

THREATS Changing media habits, streaming platforms, a damaged reputation and the current UK government, which is critical of the BBC and licence fees.

OPPORTUNIT­IES Its role as a trusted source of news and education. More commercial operations, including Britbox, a new subscripti­on-based streaming service for BBC content, which was launched in 2017 in North America, where it has more than one million subscriber­s, and in 2019 in the UK.
