EARLY DAYS The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) started as a public-service radio broadcaster in 1922. The BBC World Service was launched in 1932 and is now available in over 40 languages.
HISTORY In 2007, the BBC iplayer was released. It allows licence-fee payers in the UK to stream content. Apart from a few scandals, the BBC has focused on family entertainment, accurate information and neutrality.
THREATS Changing media habits, streaming platforms, a damaged reputation and the current UK government, which is critical of the BBC and licence fees.
OPPORTUNITIES Its role as a trusted source of news and education. More commercial operations, including Britbox, a new subscription-based streaming service for BBC content, which was launched in 2017 in North America, where it has more than one million subscribers, and in 2019 in the UK.
