How do you say “due” in German?

If a bus or train is “due”, it is expected to arrive at a particular time. If a task is “due”, it must be completed by a fixed date: “The train is due in 15 minutes.” — Der Zug soll in 15 Minuten hier sein.

“When is the report due?” — Wann muss der Bericht fertig sein?

If a payment is “due”, it has to be paid by a certain date (fällig)

— or it is “overdue” (überfällig):

“My rent is due today.” — Meine Miete ist heute fällig.

If a result is “due to something”, it is caused by it (aufgrund/wegen etw. or auf etw. zurückzuführen sein):

“All performances were cancelled due to Covid19.” — Alle Aufführungen wurden wegen Covid-19 abgesagt.

Something “due to a person” is owed to them (jmdm. zustehen):

“She doesn’t get the praise due to her.” — Sie erhält nicht das Lob, das ihr zusteht.

You can do something “in due course” (zu gegebener Zeit),

“with all due respect” (bei allem

gebührenden Respekt.) or “with due diligence” (mit gebührender Sorgfalt).

How do you say Bewegung in English?

In the context of activism and protest, a Bewegung is a group of likeminded people trying to bring about change. It is translated as movement:

Was die Welt jetzt braucht, ist eine neue Friedensbewegung.

— “What the world needs now is a new peace movement.”

When we are talking about sport activities, Bewegung is generally translated as exercise:

Mein Arzt sagt, ich brauche mehr Bewegung. — “My doctor says I need to get more exercise.”

In physics, we translate Bewegung as motion or movement,

or we can use the verb move: Die Dampflokomotive setzte sich langsam in Bewegung.—

“The steam train slowly started to move.”

If we describe a person as being ständig in Bewegung, we mean they are very active. Here, we use the phrase always be on the go:

Sie kann sich nicht entspannen. Sie muss ständig in Bewegung sein. — “She simply can’t relax. She always has to be on the go.”
