A PASSION FOR DIVING

-

There are only five oceans on our planet, but now Swatch welcomes Ocean of Storms to its Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms collection. It is dedicated to Blancpain’s legendary Fifty Fathoms, which revolutionised watchmaking more than seventy years ago by becoming the first true diver’s watch. Oceanus Procellarum – Latin for “Ocean of Storms” – is the so-called lunar mareva on the western edge of the side of the Moon that faces us. The black colour scheme of Ocean of Storms is inspired by the new moon (also known as the “black moon”). Like the other five Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathom models, the Ocean of Storms is equipped with the Swatch SISTEM51 mechanical movement, the first and only mechanical movement whose production is fully automated. This movement consists of 51 parts, including the centre screw, is anti-magnetic thanks to the Nivachrontm hairspring and has a 90-hour power reserve.

Ocean of Storms has its sea snail (scientific name Nudibranchia), Okenia Luna. It is depicted as a digital print on the movement’s rotor, the component that allows the watch to wind with every movement of the wrist automatically. The full moon with the increasing ocean of storms can also be seen as a digital imprint on the flywheel. This model is made of bioceramics, a unique material patented by Swatch. It is two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-based material derived from castor oil. As a sign of commitment to ocean conservation, NATO straps are made from recycled fishing nets. Ocean of Storms is waterproof to a depth of 91 metres.
