minister called on the Queen, who flew in from Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, where she had been spending her summer holiday .He tendered his resignation and recommended his successor. Theresa May accepted the challenging position and became the 13th prime minister to be sworn in by Queen Elizabeth II. Inevitably, people will wonder how the Queen will get on with Theresa May, but she never discloses her political views. Did she find David Cameron a bit smarmy or Tony Blair too cocky? He had to be reminded by the Queen that Winston Churchill was her first prime minister and that Mr Blair was not even born when she came to the throne. Did she find Margaret Thatcher too strident? The truth is, no one really knows. The Queen offers friendliness but not friendship. It was often suggested that the Queen didn’t get on well with Mrs Thatcher, but she awarded her the Order of Merit and attended Baroness Thatcher’s 80th birthday party.

I believe that Theresa May is just what Britain needs at the moment. She is calm but tough; she is very intelligent and willing to listen. She looks good and a lot is written about her clothes, especially the leopard skin, kitten heeled shoes. She has a great sense of humour and if anybody can, she will reunite Britain and the Conservative Party – which are divided because of the referendum. When Margaret Thatcher was Education Secretary in 1970 she said that: "There will not be a woman prime minister in my lifetime", she could never have imagined that she would hold this position from 1979 to 1990 and that in 2016, Britain would have its second woman prime minister.

Former Conservative MP, Enoch Powell said that "all politicians end in failure". Hopefully, this is not the case with Theresa May. I wish her luck in one of the most challenging jobs in Europe – she will need it! a divided country – ein gespaltenes Land to wonder – sich fragen choice – Wahl to withdraw – sich zurückziehen to chair a meeting – den Vorsitz führen apparently – anscheinend to take over – übernehmen prime minister-in-waiting – designierter Ministerpräsident clear speech – deutliche Ansprache to negotiate – verhandeln the privileged few – die wenigen Privilegierten to make a success of sth. – etw. zum Erfolg führen devoted – hingebungsvoll, liebend on the cheek – auf die Wange delighted – überglücklich faithful – treu aware – bewusst comparison – Vergleich quaint village – malerisches Dorf inundated – überschwemmt none other than – kein geringerer als vicar – Pastor recently – kürzlich the hand that life deals you – das Blatt, das Dir das Leben zuteilt outgoing – scheidend spend a holiday – den Urlaub verbringen to tender one’s resignation – seinen Rücktritt anbieten successor – Nachfolger to disclose – offenlegen smarmy – schmierig cocky – eingebildet strident – streitbar to suggest – andeuten Order of Merit – Verdienstorden to imagine – sich vorstellen
