Your letters to Spotlight and upcoming topics
Dear Spotlight team,
I discovered your periodical Spotlight one and a half years ago, and since then, I buy and read it nearly every month. I have to add: I think I am not the typical Spotlight reader, as I was born in 1932 and remember the year 1940 well, when my father said the only way to be liberated from Hitler was via Churchill. I enjoy all your reports on the English-speaking world: Australia, New Zealand, Canada and, of course, the UK.
I miss only one thing in your reports: when you write about music, you write only about pop music. I know that the role of pop music in the UK is even more important than in Germany, but the role of classical music cannot be so insignificant that it is not worth any mention at all.
In the UK you have very good orchestras, you have Covent Garden opera, you have Edinburgh and Glyndebourne festivals, you have the Proms, you have one of the most famous conductors, Sir Simon Rattle of the London Symphony Orchestra, and a splendid tradition through history, from Dowland, Byrd, Purcell, Handel (yes) to Britten. Don’t hide your light under a bushel! With my best regards,
Gottfried Stein, by post
Dear Mr Stein,
You have put a lot of thought into your letter to us, and for that I thank you. It is true that we do not write much about music in Spotlight magazine. That said, we do offer a certain amount of coverage.
Probably our last long feature on the topic was the four-page story on a talented a cappella group from the UK by Margaret Davis. The piece was entitled “The King’s Singers: Making musical magic”, and you can read it in the May 2018 issue of Spotlight.
Another tip for you: keep an eye on our “Newcomer” section in the rubric entitled “In the Spotlight” in the first part of the magazine. There you will often find a short article about a musician, and not always a pop musician.
To us at Spotlight, every reader’s suggestion we receive is of terrific value. We appreciate the opportunity to make our content, whether it be our language pages or our jouranlistic coverage, more appealing and more relevant to you. I will take your suggestion to heart and keep music in mind for upcoming article ideas. Kind regards,
Inez Sharp, editor-in-chief
