That time of the month

Most women in the Western world can buy the sanitary products they need when they are menstruating. But many women, for example in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi, Kenya, are so poor that they have to stop going to school during menstruation, use old clothes and tissue paper instead of sanitary products, or sleep with men in the hope that the men will buy the products for them.

This is why Steve Kipepeo, from Mukuru, is educating men in the slum about menstruation — to make them understand what women go through so that women will be better supported. He told the BBC that it’s difficult because many men “believe it’s a taboo to speak about menstruation”. Nevertheless, he hopes to break that taboo so that more men will buy sanitary products for the women in their lives.
