The 1st International Sculpture Symposium “Music in Stone”, exhibiting works of foreign artists, wrapped up in Baku on October 2.

Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva attended the last day of the event and viewed works by participants of the symposium, which was organized by the foundation.

Some 14 sculptors from Azerbaijan, Spain, Hungary, Germany, U.S., Bulgaria, Mexico, India, Georgia and Macedonia participated in the event, which showcased various works from local stones such as Shamkir’s sandstone and Absheron’s limestone. The sculptors were working in Baku’s Gala Settlement, in the open air.

Sculpture is one of the most ancient types of fine arts, and in Azerbaijan, this art goes back to very old times. Since time immemorial, natural stones with different features and colors used to be mined in Azerbaijan. Plastic features of Absheron’s limestone, Garabagh’s river stone and black marble, Shamkir’s yellowish-white sandstone have shaped uniqueness of the local architecture, and its decorative patterns.

The event is planned to be held annually and a museum with works of sculptors from around the world - a sculpture park - will be created in the open air.

The symposium was held as part of the Maiden Tower International Festival. The festival, which has been held since 2000, aims primarily to contribute to the worldwide promotion of the Maiden Tower in Icherisheher (Old City), one of the most ancient and mysterious monuments in Azerbaijan, which is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2000. It also helps to familiarize international artists with Azerbaijan's art and culture.

On the same day, the 5th International Waste to Art Exhibition kicked off at Gala State Historical and Ethnographic Reserve.

Leyla Aliyeva also got acquainted with the exhibition.

The exhibition was organized by Tamiz Shahar company in partnership with IDEA, Icherisheher State Historical and Architectural Reserve and Q Gallery arts gallery upon initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Various pieces of arts made of domestic waste are on display at the exhibition. 25 people representing 8 countries submitted their works for this edition of the exhibition.
