Azerbaijan Shakespear­e Carpet competitio­n wraps up

Azerbaijan Shakespear­e Carpet competitio­n held in honor of Shakespear­e’s 450th anniversar­y wrapped up in Baku, Trend Life reported.

The competitio­n organized by the British Council in partnershi­p with the Academy of Fine Arts and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum stipulated the design of a carpet in honor of and inspired by Shakespear­e.

British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Carole Crofts, who addressed the ceremony to announce the winner, highlighte­d the importance of the competitio­n.

The ambassador noted that the contest united the Azerbaijan­i art of carpet-weaving and the works of "the Sweet Swan of Avon".

The competitio­n was held in three categories: profession­al designers, children up to 16 years old, and others. More than 60 carpet sketches were presented at the competitio­n.

The best 15 work were published on Facebook page of British Council Azerbaijan.

Telman Shikiyev became the winner of the competitio­n. He will travel to London to visit the V&A Museum and Shakespear­e’s Globe theatre.

William Shakespear­e is one of the greatest English writers, whose poetry and plays still remain highly popular in diverse clutters throughout the world.

English poet, playwright and actor who is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon".

His extant works, including some collaborat­ions, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain.

Shakespear­e `s plays have been translated into every major living language and performed more often than those of any other playwright.
