Armenians massively refuse from country’s citizenship

- By Rashid Shirinov

More and more Armenians are applying for dual citizenship, which is turning into another ‘headache’ for the Armenian authorities.

The official data claims that the number of Armenians, with dual citizenship slightly exceeds 95,000, although, unofficial data shows that almost a third of the Armenian population has a second citizenship.

The issue was recently discussed at the Armenian Parliament, where MP from the Armenian National Congress party Gagik Jhangiryan stressed that the problem already threats the national security.

“We have no authority to keep a register of Armenian citizens with dual citizenship. I am sure that we have not 95,000, but several hundreds of thousands people with dual citizenship,” Jhangiryan said, adding that the government must consider the issue.

In turn, Chief of Armenian Police Vardan Yeghiazaryan affirmed that the number of such citizens keeps on growing, noting that in accordance with the official data, such persons increased by almost 2,000. At the same time, he admitted that the government has only approximate figures.

“Mainly, they are our citizens who received Russian citizenship, however, according to our data, about 70-80 percent of them live inArmenia,”Yeghiazaryan said, adding that these citizens use their second nationality to address various issues, including, social ones.

The fact that Armenians try to find another ‘island of rescue’ is quite logical. The Armenian economy deteriorates day by day – the country’s main problems, doleful unemployment rate and terrible corruption, do not let Armenians live a normal life. Daily people in Armenia take to the streets to protest against the government. And as they do not see any positive respond from the authorities, they opt to live in another, safer country.

If the economic and social situation in Armenia deteriorates even more, one-third of population can leave the country in the blink of an eye and never return. This will even more worsen the demographic situation in the country, turning the poor Armenia also in an all-elderly country.
