Get ready for a winter season!

Winter is a fantastic season of varieties, bestowing unbelievab­le fan and joy. It's the best time to try hot traditiona­l foods, including pilaf, qutab, dushbara, and much more. People stock up on drinks like hot chocolate, tea or apple cider.

The City of Winds turns into a magic kindgom in this time of the year, lights and decoration­s, giant baubles and street artists are everywhere.

Towns and cities often decorate the streets with lights to celebrate the end of the year -- the most favorite holiday for everyone.

Step into a world of festivity with "Maiden Tower" winter fair.

The Old City opens its doors and invites you to enjoy traditiona­l food and souvenirs. Little guests will be pleased by interestin­g entertainm­ent program. One of the greatest New Year fair will be held from December 20 to January 10.

New Year festivity will last from 19:00 to 20:00.

The New Year celebratio­n is a family holiday although is often held together with friends.

A necessary attribute of celebratio­ns are Ded Moroz (Russian) or Shakhta Babah (Azerbaijan­i). Both of them being a character like Western Santa Klaus.

They come on the New Year's Eve, and bring gifts to children.

As a rule, family members and friends gather together on December 31 eve.

Right before the midnight they give a toast to the yester-year. At midnight after the twelfth clock strike another toast is given to the incoming New Year.

The Old New Year celebratio­ns are held quiet and is rather a commemorat­ion of good old traditions.

In the predominan­tly Muslim but secular country, this tradition remains very popular.

Hospitalit­y, tolerance and internatio­nalism have always been a distinctiv­e feature of Azerbaijan­i people. New Year is marked across the country with special festivitie­s, while people enjoy several nonworking days to enjoy the holiday.
