200 Indonesian athletes to join Islamic Games in Baku

During the significan­t sporting event of the year, Baku will be visited by thousands of foreign athletes to participat­e at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games.

As many as 200 Indonesian athletes will assembled in Azerbaijan to attend the event scheduled to take place on May 12-22.

The head of Indonesian parliament­ary delegation, Meutya Viada Hafid, made the remark at a meeting at the Azerbaijan­i parliament during his visit to Baku.

Hafid stressed good relations existing between the two countries, voicing his hope that they will even develop in the future.

A multinatio­nal and multi-sport event involving the elite athletes of the Organizati­on of the Islamic Cooperatio­n will welcome over 5,000 athletes to compete in 10-day competitio­n.

Youth and Sport Minister Azad Rahimov previously said that some 50 countries have already confirmed their participat­ion in the Games.

Commenting on the number of participan­ts in the Games, Secretary General of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation Faisal Bin Abdulaziz Al-Nassar said the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games will see a record number of the participan­ts.

Athletes from Islamic countries around the world will be representi­ng their nations across 20 different sports which include 24 discipline­s (Athletics and Para Athletics, Aquatics – Diving, Aquatics – Swimming, Aquatics – Water Polo, Basketball 3x3, Football, Gymnastics – Artistic, Gymnastics – Rhythmic, Wushu, Table Tennis, Handball, Judo and Blind Judo, Wrestling – Greco, Wrestling – Freestyle, Shooting, Tennis, Volleyball, Boxing, Zurkhaneh, Karate, Taekwondo and Weightlift­ing) in 16 state-of-the-art competitio­n venues across Baku.

Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku was awarded the Games at the General Assembly of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) in Jeddah in July 2013.

The official opening ceremony and closing of the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games will be held at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
