Three-fourths of Azerbaijan’s population use Internet
Azerbaijanis are among the most active Internet users among the Asian nations, a report of the Internet World Stats organization revealed.
The study shows that level of Internet penetration in Azerbaijan, with a population of over 9.8 million, amounts to 75.5 percent. Thus, the number of the country’s Internet users exceeds 7,531 million people.
The report states that the Azerbaijani Internet market forms 0.4 percent of the total Asian market.
Azerbaijan is ahead of many countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan for the level of Internet penetration.
Moreover, the country leaves behind all its neighbors, which are Russia, Turkey, Iran, Georgia and Armenia in this index, and also ranks first among the CIS states.
As for the number of users among the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, Kazakhstan ranks first – the country has more than 13.2 million Internet users.
The report states that Asian countries account for 50.2 percent of all Internet users in the world. In total, Asia has more than 1.87 billion users of the world wide web.
The number of Azerbaijani internet users who are going online via mobile phone data connections has reached 57.49 per cent in the first quarter of this year, which is 7.41 per cent more than in 2016.
This exceeds the global mobile internet usage figure, which is 55.05 per cent. The number of those who made use of the net via mobile phones in 2016 was 52.03 per cent in Azerbaijan. This March alone saw this figure make 58.25 per cent.
Overall, the ICT sector has intensively developed in Azerbaijan over the past years. Creation and developing of the e-Government system, expanding the broadband internet services, launch of the telecommunication and low-orbit satellites, and many other are the evidence of Azerbaijan’s success in this sphere.
