Armenian militaries keep high tension on contact line, shell Azerbaijani villages

- By Laman Ismayilova

rmenian militaries continue provocative actions on the contact line of ArmenianAzerbaijani troops to keep the residents along the border and frontline settlements under constant fear.

Unsatisfied with aggravating tensions on the frontline, the Armenian armed forces again shelled Azerbaijani settlements located near the contact line.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry has reported that thanks to the urgent actions, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces suppressed the enemy. The ministry informed that the military equipment of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces was not harmed and the military personnel did not suffer any losses.

Armenian Armed Forces shelled three villages of Agdam region on the evening of May 16, Chief Executive of the Region Ragub Mammadov told Trend.

Starting from the second half of the day, Armenian armed forces, located in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, fired from mortars the villages of Ashagi Garvand, Ahmadaghali and Tazakend in Agdam region. As a result, the power line with capacity of 10,000 volts was damaged in Tazakend village.

“At night the line was restored, and the village was provided with electricity,” Mammadov told reporters.

The Armenian militaries also shelled the territory of Azerbaijan’s Tartar region, adjacent to the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, in the evening of May 16.

Chief Executive of Tartar Region Mustagim Mammadov told Trend that Armenians used mortars while shelling the territory of the region. “Our territories were fired at about 22:30. The villages were not damaged – mainly unpopulated areas came under fire," said Mammadov.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that currently Azerbaijani Armed Forces fully control the operational situation.

The Armenian side has revealed footage of shelling of human settlements and positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, as well as the information about allegedly losses from the Azerbaijani side, the Ministry reported on May 17.

“By disseminating this video, Armenia demonstrated that it periodically shells not only the positions of the Armed Forces, but also the human settlements of Azerbaijan, thereby confirming that Armenia continues provocations against the peaceful Azerbaijani population,” the ministry reported.

The Armenian side constantly breaches the ceasefire and resorts to attempts of sabotage against Azerbaijan. Over the past 24 hours, Armenia’s armed forces, using large-caliber machine guns and mortars, have 115 times violated the ceasefire along the line of contact.

For more than two decades Armenia and Azerbaijan are in a state of war following Yerevan’s aggression, ethnic cleansing policy and illegal territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenia keeps under control over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions in a brutal war in the early 1990s.

Despite a fragile ceasefire agreement signed in 1994, Armenia keeps violating armistice with Azerbaijan.
