Toll roads to appear in country

- By Sara Israfilbayova

Azeravtoyol JSC, engaged in construction and upgrade of the road infrastructure in Azerbaijan, announced that toll roads will soon appear in the country.

Spokesman for Azeravtoyol OJSC Anar Najafli, talking to Trend, said that one of the toll roads has already been determined.

"This is the road Baku-Alat-Astara-border with Iran. We appealed to the appropriate structures to make this road paid. Now the construction of this road is underway. But it does not mean that drivers moving in this direction should necessarily use this road. The road, which is used now, is free and it will be an alternative to the toll road," Najafli added.

Najafli went on to say that the cost of a kilometer of toll road will be 4-7 gapiks, depending on the vehicle (car or truck). The toll road will be shorter than the alternative one.

The spokesman mentioned that more toll roads maybe built in the future. "For example, if there is an investor, we can build the GubaShamakhi road. This road will be 200 kilometers shorter than the current road that passes through Baku," he stated.

Najafli said that all revenues from the toll roads will be spent for the road maintenance.

Milli Majlis [Parliament] adopted amendments and additions to the law "On Roads" in 2013.

Members of the Parliament decided that in order to modernize and expand the network of highways and provide quality services to motorists, toll roads could be built in the country.

Toll roads exist in European countries and in some neighboring countries, such as Turkey, Kazakhstan and others.

Report for January-September 2016 of Azeravtoyol Company said that a total of 542.7 kilometers of roads were built, repaired and reconstructed throughout the country’s territory in January-September 2016.

The work on road improvement also included construction of 12 new road bridges and repair of five bridges. More than 30 roads, avenues and streets with a total length of 63.2 kilometers were reconstructed and repaired in Baku.

All these works were carried out in accordance with the State Programs on Socio-Economic Development of regions of Azerbaijan for 2014-2018 and of Baku City and Its Settlements in 2014-2016, approved by President Ilham Aliyev.
