Illiteracy plagues Armenia’s population

- By Rashid Shirinov

The results of entrance exams into universities have recently been summarized in Armenia, the lists of the entrants were published, and it became clear that the educational system of Armenia is in a deplorable state.

As it is seen from the lists, the number of entrants decreased rapidly as compared to previous years, and now there are thousands of vacant places in many faculties of Armenian universities.

It is noteworthy that the exams weren’t held under a strict control – the applicants were mostly able to help each other. However, the results are terrible, thus portraying that the students weren’t given enough knowledge in their schools.

Another possible reason for such a small number of enrolled students can be the constant exodus of Armenians from the country. Last year’s number of graduates from Armenian schools was 22,069, but this year this number equaled to 19,618 people. This shows that Armenia has lost significant number of students during the past year.

The year’s Last Bell did not sound in a number of Armenian schools due to lack of graduates, and this problem is acute especially in the border villages. For example, there is no graduate, or only two or three of them in several schools of Syunik and Lori provinces of the country. The Armenian government decides to close such schools and this leads to an even more severe educational crisis in the country.

Another interesting fact is that the vacant places that remained for Armenian universities are for the paid system of education. That means Armenians don’t have enough money to send their sons and daughters to study at university. Instead of receiving education, Armenians go to work at second-rate jobs – hence, the level of illiteracy increases among the Armenian population.

Now, the country again announces the entrance exam, that will be held on July 20-25 to fill the vacant places. Taking into account that Armenian students don’t get appropriate knowledge in schools, it is clear that the results of the coming exam won’t be much better than those of the previous one.
