The logistics center in Kars, which is being built together with Azerbaijan, will give impetus to the development of the economy of the entire region and, in particular, the Kars province, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on June 7.

He noted that the opening of this logistics center will also contribute to the increase of cargo transportation.

“Another important Turkish-Azerbaijani project in Kars is the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway,” Yildirim added.

Previously, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication of Turkey told Trend that the construction of the logistics center in Kars within the BTK project has been carried out by more than 50 percent and the opening of the center will be held on October 30 this year.

A plot of 300,000 square meters was allocated for the construction of the logistics center, of which an area of 170,000 square meters is allocated for a barn. It will be possible to transport 412,000 tons of cargo annually through the center.

The ministry also noted that 16kilometer-long railway lines will be built on the territory of the logistics center, and this section will be connected to the Kars-Erzurum railway.

The agreement on the creation of the logistics center was signed on July 19 last year, during the visit of Head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov to the Kars province, when he familiarized himself with the progress of the BTK project.

The official opening ceremony of the BTK railway was held in Baku on October 30, 2017. The railway was constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway’s peak capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At an initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
