President: Strong economic infrastruc­ture creates good opportunit­ies for Finnish companies

Azerbaijan­i President Ilham Aliyev has received a delegation led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Developmen­t of Finland Anne-Mari Virolainen on July 5.

The head of state said that the visit of the Minister for Foreign Trade and Developmen­t of Finland to Azerbaijan creates a good opportunit­y for cooperatio­n in the economic sphere between the countries, including the issues related to the growth of trade turnover, stressing wide potential in this regard.

Noting the importance of cooperatio­n in the sphere of transport corridors, President Aliyev emphasized that currently Azerbaijan actively invests in the creation of a transport link between neighborin­g and partner countries.

Azerbaijan is turning into an important link in the major East-West and North-South transport corridors, said the head of state.

“The successful implementa­tion of the North-South transport project began. Azerbaijan invests largely in this sphere,” he said.

President Aliyev also noted the importance of increasing activity in the business sphere in terms of expanding economic cooperatio­n.

Referring to the work of several Finnish companies in Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev said that the number of these companies can be increased and added that the economic developmen­t of Azerbaijan, promising plans, a strong economic structure provide Finnish companies, like other foreign enterprise­s, with good opportunit­ies for active work in various sectors of the country’s economy.

Virolainen conveyed the greetings of the President of Finland Sauli Niinisto to the head of state. She noted that it is a pleasure to recall the meeting of the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Finland held in Davos.

Noting that the program of the visit to Azerbaijan is very meaningful, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Developmen­t of Finland expressed the hope that fruitful meetings will be held during the visit.

Virolainen said that the beauty of Baku made an impression on the members of the delegation, adding that the historical architectu­ral monuments in the capital make up an excellent unity with modern buildings.

She noted that countries have a common history, and there are good opportunit­ies for expanding cooperatio­n between Azerbaijan and Finland.

The meeting focused o an exchange of views on the participat­ion of Finnish companies in energy, transit, infrastruc­ture projects, in vocational education, expansion of trade ties between businessme­n, investment, prospects for cooperatio­n in the field of ecology and other spheres.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were establishe­d on March 24, 1992.
