Corporate sector better protected from cyber attacks

- By Rashid Shirinov

Azerbaijan is among the countries with the lowest rate of corporate users exposed to cyber attacks through the web, reads the report of Kaspersky Lab on cyber threats in the CIS countries at the end of the first seven months of 2018.

This figure stood at only 16.1 percent in Azerbaijan in January-July this year, the report says, while it reached 24 percent in Tajikistan, 23.4 percent in Kyrgyzstan, 23 percent in Belarus, and 21.5 per cent in Ukraine during the reporting period.

Thus, Azerbaijan ranks 9th in terms of corporate users who are exposed to cyber attacks through the web.

According to Sergey Zemkov, Managing Director of Kaspersky Lab in Russia and the CIS, the low figure for Azerbaijan suggested that corporate users in the country are better protected. He did not exclude that this is due to the high level of their training.

The managing director believes that companies in Azerbaijan are actively working to improve their security, but, unfortunately, the level of piracy is still high in the personal segment and in small and mediumsized businesses. The statistics of Kaspersky Lab are usually prepared based on the data of licensed users.

Zemkov also noted that the Internet market of Azerbaijan is quite concentrated, and active web threats can be controlled at the internal level.

“Due to the small number of entry points of global Internet traffic, it is not difficult to organize a higher level of security in small countries,” he said.

It is noteworthy that the share of corporate users attacked by local threats in January-July this year was 50 percent in Tajikistan, 46.7 percent in Turkmenistan, 38.2 percent in Kazakhstan, and 29 percent in Azerbaijan.

Enterprises in every country are subject to constantly increasing numbers of cyber attacks, which may cause serious economic and societal damage to the enterprise and the country as a whole. Therefore, it is important for every enterprise to apply additional means of security.

The main sources for computer infection are the Internet, removable storage devices and malicious email attachments and scripts embedded in the body of emails. Therefore, in order to protect a computer from any kind of cyber attacks, the user should use antivirus programs and be attentive while surfing the Internet, without visiting suspicious websites and using such applications.
