Mound archaeological park to appear in Ganja

- By Naila Huseynli

It is planned to create a unique mound archaeological park in Azerbaijan for the first time in the world, said Parviz Gasimov, head of Public Relations Department of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS.

He said that the archaeological park is planned to build around Ganja city.

“It is envisaged that the top cover of the mound will be covered with a transparent, plastic coating after being investigated. Thus, tourists can get familiar with the shape of the grave chamber, and the burial customs of the Bronze Age”, he added.

The head of the department mentioned that in 2015, the expedition team of the Institute conducted archaeological exploration activities in Ganja city and surrounding areas. The GPS coordinates of the mound-type grave monuments discovered from the Ganja airport to the cemetery called "Yeni Sabzikar" and from the city entrance to the administrative borders of Goygol region were taken and mapped. It is believed that mound type monuments belong to the Bronze Age.

At present, the Azerbaijani-Italian expedition team conducts research in one of the mounds. The graves will be museumized after a thorough research, Gasimov stated.

“This work will take long. The numbers of explored mounds will be increased from year to year. Accordingly, copy of the exhibits for the museum will be created by architects,” he said.

Gasimov noted that the creation of this park will provide more detailed information about the history of Azerbaijan.
