Davos meeting as beginning of real solution to Karabakh conflict

- By Abdul Kerimkhanov

Organizers of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos called the meeting of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan one of the 33 main events of the forum, the website of the WEF reported.

OAn informal meeting between President Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan took place on the margins of the World Economic Forum on January 22.

"I dare to suggest that the Davos meeting is the beginning of a real resolution of the Karabakh conflict," famous Russian TV host and international expert Yevgeny Mikhailov told Trend.

It is obvious that President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan looked more confident and came forward with a more comprehensive settlement plan than Nikol Pashinyan, he added. "This fact indicates that Pashinyan has a small choice, especially against the background of recent comments by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs on the need to take measures to prepare the population of the conflicting parties for peace.”

Mikhailov noted that the Davos meeting of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, first of all, showed that at this stage the Armenian government does not have a clear political line in terms of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement negotiation process.

Russia is now putting maximum efforts to help precisely Baku, since Russophobic sentiments in Yerevan are only gaining momentum.

The meeting in Davos was preceded by talks between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Paris on January 16 with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group, which were positively assessed by the international community - officials of the European Union, the UN, as well as statements supporting the creation of trust mechanisms between conflicting parties.

Earlier, President Aliyev said in Davos that in some cases the resolutions of the UN Security Council are executed in a few days, and in some cases remain on paper for more than 20 years and all this leads to the devaluation of the international world order.

In turn, Prime Minister Pashinyan, on the way to a meeting with the President of Azerbaijan in Davos, held a telephone conversation with the first President of Armenia, Levon Ter Petrosyan.

Ter-Petrosyan, at the end of his presidency, came to the conclusion that it was necessary to immediately achieve peace with Azerbaijan, claiming that in the future Armenia would find itself in an uneasy situation.

Pashinyan understands the inevitable withdrawal from at least some of the occupied Azerbaijani territories and is taking steps to neutralize the "Karabakh clan" from power by exposing their brazen corruption and crimes against the Armenian people.

It is hard to say whether he will be able to go all the way and crush his opponents. But Pashinyan proved that he is a risky person and is able to tackle the most difficult problems. Especially when it becomes harder and even impossible to delay negotiations.

So, the liberation of the occupied Azerbaijani territories in 2019 is highly probable. Now it is up to Armenia to make a choice between peace and war.
